NEW DELHI, July 17: Delhi University Vice Chancellor V.R. Mehta has appointed Justice J.K. Mehra, a retired judge of Delhi High Court, to conduct an inquiry into the violent incidents at the academic council meeting held on July 11.University Registrar K.K. Panda today said that Justice Mehra would inquire into the charges levelled against Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA) president Sri Ram Oberoi, National Democratic Teachers' Front (NDTF) president S.S. Rathi and Academics for Action and Development (AAD) chairman Inder Mohan Kapahy in terms of the provisions of statute 18 (4) of the statutes of the university.
Protesting teachers, researchers and students had converged at the venue of the academic council meeting on that day and the subsequent violent incidents and police lathicharge left about 30 people injured.
The university authorities had blamed Oberoi, Kapahy and Rathi for instigating the violence.
The DUTA president and the vice-chancellor had charged each other with attempt to assault.
