NEW DELHI, July 17: In a surprising move, District Judge K.P. Verma has sought voluntary retirement. The letter was sent on July 15 to Lt-Governor Vijai Kapoor through the Delhi High Court. Verma has been the District Judge since April 9, 1996. He was scheduled to retire in February this year, but received a two-year extension.

While no new name has been announced for the position, the seniormost Additional District Judge, Ravi Kumar, is now officiating in Verma's absence. Members of the Delhi Bar Association said that Verma ``retired as he was not moved to the High Court''. The DBA had called a one-day strike last year to protest against the ``non-consideration of Verma's name for elevation to the High Court''.

Verma was initially with the Uttar Pradesh judicial service before moving to Delhi.
