EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE

PUNE, July 17: Former president of the Bharatiya Janata Party's Pimpri-Chinchwad unit Vasant Vani has been removed from the party for six years.

PUNE, July 17: Former president of the Bharatiya Janata Party's Pimpri-Chinchwad unit Vasant Vani has been removed from the party for six years.

In a major action today, the district president of the party also dissolved the party executive committee formed barely six months back.

The action comes as a sequel to the recent incident in which some BJP members tried to blacken the face of senior BJP corporator Dr Geeta Aphale in protest against her alleged anti-party activities. The incident had brought forth the factional fights in the BJP unit.

Vani's wife Mai Vani, a former party rebel Shyamala Sonavane and other members Shobha Mirajkar, Hasina Shaikh and Alka Pawar who were involved in the incident have also been removed from the party for six years.

Party members had charged that Aphale was involved in anti-party activities and was responsible for the defeat of the party candidate Mahesh Kulkarni in the elections to the PCMT committee held in April.

While Kulkarni did not receive a single vote, party rebel Jagdish T Shetty secured for himself a seat in the transport body. Kulkarni who had made a demand to the Divisional Commissioner to initiate action under the anti-defection clauses, has also been served with a show-cause notice.

Vani said his suspension from the party for six years without any proper enquiry was an injustice to him.
