Jaya puts Govt in dire straits on Cauvery

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHENNAI, July 19: The irrepressible AIADMK chief J Jayalalitha put Vajpayee Government into its next major crisis when she threatened it ``disastrous consequences'' if the Centre failed to notify a scheme to implement the interim award of the Cauvery water tribunal in the next two days.

This warning comes ahead of the July 21 hearing in the Supreme Court on Cauvery river water dispute case. Jayalalitha issued the warning in a statement here saying ``I am bound to caution Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee that if his Government further delays the notification on the scheme, the consequences will be disastrous.''

The BJP, however, asserted there was no threat to Vajpayee government and expressed confidence that a solution would emerge by July 21.

In a ten-page statement, Jaya demanded tabling in Parliament a draft scheme for implementation of the interim order of the Cauvery water tribunal under which Karnataka has to supply 210 tmc feet of water to Tamil Nadu every year. Tamil Nadu's case fornotification of the draft scheme by the Centre will come up for hearing in the Supreme Court on July 21.

In New Delhi, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Madan Lal Khurana said that he saw ``no threat to the Government'' and expressed confidence that an amicable solution would be found.

BJP spokesman M Venkaiah Naidu expressed confidence that the Government would come forward with a solution on July 21. He said political parties from Tamil Nadu were as much justified in representing their case as MPs and political parties of Karnataka in safeguarding the interest of the state. CPM said the Cauvery issue should be mutually discussed between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu governments.

While the government and political parties in Tamil Nadu are demanding immediate notification of the draft scheme, the government and political parties in Karnataka are opposed to this.

Karnataka Chief Minister J H Patel came out with a statement saying that MPs from the state would meet the Prime Minister tomorrow and present thestate's viewpoint.

DON'T PRECIPITATE THE ISSUE: In his reaction to Jayalalitha's usual hardline position, Patel asserted that the Cauvery issue should be solved amicably and nothing could be forced upon any state in the wake of the warning.

``Either (TN Chief Minister) Karunanidhi should speak to me or the Prime Minister should call me up. The rest is redundant,'' Patel told Doordarshan here.

Pleas to Vajpayee not to yield to the ``blackmailing tactics'' of Jayalalitha also came from many other quarters from Karnataka. Major Irrigation Minister K N Nagegowda said when MPs met Vajpayee it would be stressed that Jaya's moves were politically motivated and that there was no need to notify the scheme prepared by the Centre to form the authority to give effect to the Cauvery dispute tribunal's interim order.
