Bakre wins gold at World Youth Moscow:

Asian junior chess champion Tejas Bakre of India has won the gold medal at the first World Youth Games here.

Bakre topped the field comprising 590 players from 22 countries in the chess tournament, held in three different categories, leader of the 10-member Indian junior chess team, Bharat Singh Chauhan told PTI here today.

Bakre, who became India's 22nd International Master in winning the Asian Junior Chess Championship (u-20) at Rasht, Iran in May, has been asked to stay back in Moscow till July 26, the day world No 2 Vishwanathan Anand will be presented the coveted Chess Oscar. Bakre is the first Indian to win the Asian junior and sub-junior titles sub-junior at Mumbai in December last.

Santra, Mantu top

Noopor Santra of South Eastern bagged the coveted men's singles title while Mantu Ghosh clinched the women's single crown in the individual events of 46th All India Inter-Railway Table Tennis Championship, which concluded last evening at YMCAHall.

Experienced international star Santra outplayed Shivaji Dutta (Eastern) 21-14,11-21, 21-13, 21-10. Mantu recorded straight victories over top seed Kasturi Chakraborty 21-13, 21-19, 21-10.

TVS supreme

MADURAI: TVS Club, Madurai, regained the prestigious Shri BD Goenka Memorial Trophy for the record 11th time defeating Accountant General Office Recreation Club (AGORC), Chennai by four runs in the final of the 14th State-level limited overs knock-out cricket tournament conducted by the Indian Express Dinamani Sports Club at the Agricultural College Grounds here today.

Results: TVS Club 172-8 in 30 overs (Noorul Riaz 28, Srinivasan 59, Meenakshisundaram 24, Ramasubramaniam 27, Chandrasekaran 2-40, Sethuraman 2- 20) bt AGORC (Chennai) 168 (27.1) overs (P Rajkumar 79, A Raseek Bhareeth 31, Chandrasekaran 17, Raja 4-28, Prince 2-24).
