Sri Lanka beaten in two days
CARDIFF:
Sri Lanka produced a late fightback before sliding to A five- wicket defeat to Glamorgan inside two days of their three-day tour cricket match here today.

Twenty-two wickets fell on the first day, prompting the England and Wales Cricket Board to send chief inspector of pitches, Harry Brind, to Cardiff. But there were few early problems as the tourists lost only one wicket in the morning session, with Marvan Atapattu hitting a magical 99, while adding 101 runs to their overnight 35 for two.

However, they capitulated in the afternoon and were bowled out for 222 before tea, leaving Glamorgan a modest 53 for victory but the target was not reached without a few scares.

Slater slaughter
DERBY:
Michael Slater plundered 185 runs off South Africa's bowling attack to rescue Derbyshire froma seemingly hopeless position on the first day of their three-day match, here, yesterday.

In deep trouble at 94 for six, the Australian came to Derbyshire's rescue with a spanking innings which included 28 fours and a six in his side's eventual total of 337 all out. In reply, South Africa were 88 for two.

Vogts retained
BONN:
Germany's soccer coach Berti Vogts is to continue to lead and take sole responsibility for the national side, the German soccer federation (DFB) has said.

``The DFB committee have stated their full trust in trainer Berti Vogts for the rebuilding of the national team,'' the DFB said yesterday.

DFB president Egidius Braun and five of his officials met Vogts in Stuttgart on Friday to analyse the team's performance in France and map out a future strategy.

Brisbane hosts
NEW YORK:
The city of Brisbane in Queensland, Australia, will stage the fourth edition of the Goodwill Games in 2001.

Games founder and time Warner vice-chairman Ted Turner told a newsconference yesterday Brisbane had been chosen to stage the first Goodwill Games outside the United States and Russia.

Previous Games have been held in Moscow in 1986, Seattle in 1990 and St Petersburg, Russia, four years ago. The 1998 Games start in New York today.

Susi to retire
JAKARTA:
Ace Indonesian shuttler Susi Susanti has confirmed she would retire from the badminton arena after the Bangkok Asian Games in December. A gold medal in the Asian Games is the only honour that has eluded the former World and Olympic champion in her glittering career, reports Xinhua.

She said it was a big challenge for her to "complete the haul of the championships and contribute her last triumph to her country."

Eubank stopped
SHEFFIELD:
Carl Thompson stopped fellow Briton Chris Eubank to retain his World Boxing Organisation (WBO) cruiserweight title yesterday.

The fight was stopped before the scheduled start of the 10th round after Thompson's heavy punches had left Eubank's left eye closed andswollen as they had in their previous title fight just three months earlier.

The fight was ended after the doctor intervened and was the first time former World champion Eubank had been stopped in a career of more than 50 fights.
