CHANDIGARH, July 19: A number of ex-servicemen in the City have decided to set up a vigilance committee to keep a check on traffic violations by police and VIP vehicles.
The 25-member committee will start functioning from July 25, when the Punjab and Haryana High Court judgment of July 9 on traffic regulations comes into effect. Any VIP or police vehicle observed flouting traffic rules in accordance with the High Court directive will be reported directly to the UT Inspector General of Police.
A resolution to this effect was passed at a meeting of the committee members drawn from the local chapter of the All India Ex-servicemen Welfare Association (AIEWA) yesterday. The AIEWA chairman, Bhim Sen Sehgal, said he had also discussed the issue with IGP R.P. Singh some days back.
Committee members say that earlier reporting such offending vehicles to the police control room had little or no effect. The problem of police and VIP vehicles flouting traffic norms, including unauthorised use of blinkers, hooters and exceeding speed-limits, has become acute in the City, they add.
The committee, unlike traffic wardens, will have no powers to take any action on their own. The committee can, apart from taking up the matter with the IGP, go to the High Court's high-powered committee with the complaint.
"Any violation of the HC's orders by drivers will be treated as contempt of court," the members point out.
