Srinagar to host North Zone Ranji matches

NEW DELHI, July 19: After almost a decade, Srinagar would play host to some of the North Zone Ranji Trophy matches when the domestic season begins in October.

NEW DELHI, July 19: After almost a decade, Srinagar would play host to some of the North Zone Ranji Trophy matches when the domestic season begins in October.

This was decided at a meeting in Srinagar last evening between SDA Draboo, chairman, J and K Cricket Association, and Ajat Shatru Singh, the state minister for information, youth services and sports and president of the association.

The meeting is reported to have discussed ``various problems regarding smooth functioning of the association.''

The association is a divided lot with the Jammu and Kashmir units each claiming to be the real association.

The members were reportedly assured that all matters regarding the association will be resolved shortly after discussions with the Jammu-based members of the association.

The association president said that he was keen to resolve the matter for the smooth holding of the tournament and selection of players in the state.

For the last couple of years, two separate teams one representing Jammu and the other Kashmir had been coming to play other states in North Zone, creating problems for the host associations. In fact, last year, the Services and Delhi faced a predicament with two teams landing on the field, each carrying court orders to the effect that they were the genuine association.

This year, the Jammu and Kashmir association is scheduled to play hosts to the Services (October 21-25), Haryana (November 6-10), Himachal (November 19-23) and Delhi (November 25-29). According to the original schedule, Udhampur was to host all these matches. Now, it is likely that some of these games may be shifted to Srinagar.
