Community tension grips Magrol taluka
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SURAT, July 19: Tension prevailed in the Jankhvaav village of Magrol taluka on Sunday, with traders demanding the arrest of a priest for allegedly leading a mob that targetted shops owned by the majority community on Friday. Traders at Jhankhvaav have decided to keep their shops closed until the priest is arrested. MLAs Rajnikant Rajwadi and Dhansukh Patel subsequently visited the village and assured the people that all involved in the attack would be arrested soon. They are reported to have told the police officials to take stern action against those who sparked off the violence late on Friday.According to the police, violence erupted over a plot of land where a group of Christian missionaries have been running a school for the past 14 years. The land was reportedly the object of a tussle between Father Albert, who runs and manages the school, and one Chandulal Narottam Surti, the tenant. Father Albert is reported to be absconding, while three people have been arrested. Copyright © 1998 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
