Ruhi upstages Rege in final

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, July 24: A 12-year-old lass from Dhulia held centre-stage at the Juhu Vile Parle Gymkhana (JVPG) this evening. The pocket-size Ruhi Chawla exhibited her tenacity in big measure while claiming the State Ranking Table Tennis sub-junior girls title.

The eighth standard student of Canossa Convent, rallied splendidly after being two games down to upstage Rujuta Rege 22-24 21-23 21-18 21-14 21-15 in the final. Earlier, the unseeded Ruhi had made her intentions clear by shocking third seed Ashwini Mokashi 18-21 21-6 20-22 21-17 24-22 in a gruelling encounter that lasted the distance.

The unseeded Rujuta too had something to cheer about in the semi-final having upset the second seed Aditi Jagannathan 21-16 18-21 21-16 19-21 21-15. However, she met her match in Ruhi, who displayed better temperamant in the summit clash.

Despite the energy sapping clashes, Ruhi continued unfazed and waltzed into the women's pre-quarterfinals defeating Neha Sidhaye 22-20 23-25 21-16. However, sixth seed Mamta Prabhu endedher foray into the big league with an emphatic 12-11 21-16 21-8 verdict.

Another unseeded player who shared the day's honours was 17-year-old Reshma Bhosale who ended second seed Janhavi Deshpande's aspirations 16-21 21-13 21-15 21-17 in the women's singles second round.

Second seed Ankur Mahajan did justice to his billing winning the sub-junior boys singles crown defeating the top seed Kalpesh Mohite 18-21 21-17 21-16 21-13.

Overcoming an erratic start, the 13-year-old eighth standard student of St Blaise School asserted himself by claiming the next three games and the title.

Mallika Parekh, who had won a double crown in the recently concluded Matunga Gymkhana State Ranking tournament, was on course of repeating the act by entering the women's singles quarters and the girls singles pre-quarterfinals.
