Panchkula challan count up on Day Two

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, July 26: In compliance with the High Court orders, the traffic police continued challaning defaulters in the City for the second day today, while the challan count picked up in neighbouring Panchkula.

Though the City police were taken off the job of booking defaulters after yesterday's drive, the traffic police will continue challaning defaulters with full gusto, a senior traffic police official said. The official said a record 1,547 challans were issued for various traffic violations yesterday.

As many as 719 car drivers were booked for using sun-control films on glass-panes, while 342 women were issued challans for riding pillion without helmets, 65 for riding two-wheelers without helmets and over 200 male pillion-riders for not wearing helmets. Another highlight of yesterday's joint-checking programme was the punching of driving licences of defaulters. As many as 1,021 licences were punched. "Four more violations and their licences will be cancelled," an official asserted.

In Panchkula, the drive to enforce the orders started yesterday evening with the police challaning nearly 155 vehicles. Superintendent of Police Alok Mittal said that nakas were set up at 12 points yesterday, which were extended to all major points in the district today. Today's challan count was 210, he added.

The police started challaning the people at 10 am in the morning till 1 pm. The drive picked up speed at 2 pm and continued till 7.30 pm. Women and pillion riders without helmets and the owners of the vehicles who had not removed the films from the vehicle windows were challaned during the drive.
