Constables to receive career guidance

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, July 26: The beat constable you see swinging his lathi as he rushes past the ITO crossing is not necessarily chasing some petty thief. He's probably on his way to school.

A career guidance centre for constables and head constables was opened on July 10, 1997, in an effort to help them compete for the sub-inspector's examination and other competitive examinations.

The centre has conducted four capsule courses, each of three-months duration, in the past year. According to the Delhi Police, 303 candidates have benefitted from the coaching facilities. The fifth course is scheduled to start on August 3. Each course is supposed to have 70 candidates, who are enrolled after a written test and an interview. Candidates are taught a number of subjects ranging from `general intelligence' to quantitative aptitude.

The cops are provided notes which are dutifully prepared by the faculty members. However, only three candidates have so far made it to higher grades in Government organisations.
