CHANDIGARH, July 26: Punjab `B' and Haryana `A' won their league matches in convincing fashion in the second North Zone Independence Gold Cup hockey tournament at the Sector 42 Hockey stadium here today.Punjab `B' beat Chandigarh `B' 4-1 while Haryana `A' thrashed Himachal Pradesh `A' 12-0.
Chandigarh A also sufferred a setback, facing a 10-0 rout at Jammu and Kashmir's hands.
In a match which was dominated by Punjab `B', Chandigarh `B' team missed a few chances to score in the initial stages of the encounter for which they paid dearly later on.
Even the Punjab forward line failed to grab chances in the first half. They earned four penalty corners but all went abegging.
After a barren first half, Punjab's Ombir Singh found the target in the opening minutes of the second session. Balbir Singh made it 2-0.
However, a laspe in the Punjab's defence enabled Gurpal Singh to reduce the margin (1-2).
Ombir got his second and team's third goal in the later part of the second half (3-1) and Balbir Singh's sizzling hit from top of the `D' beat the Chandigarh goalkeeper Harpreet Singh (4-1).
Himachal Pradesh `A' were no match for Haryana `A' team who were far superior than the opponents in all the departments of the game.
Jatinder Singh opened the score for Haryana `A' in the opening minutes of the game. Thereafter, Haryana `A' scored at regular intervals. Damandeep (5), Meharban (1), Sandeep (2) Kulbushan (1), Jatinder (1) were the other marksmen for the team.
In another one-sided affair, Jammu and Kashmir routed Chandigarh `A' 10-0. The eventual winner led 4-0 at the break.
Onkar scored four goals including a hat-trick. Maninder Singh and Gurpreet Singh got two each while Amit Rana and M Singh scored one each for the winners.
Jammu and Kashmir will face Himachal Pradesh `B' in the morning session while Chandigarh `A' will take on Haryana `B' in the second match of the day.
