Get off city roads, apex court orders vehicles

NEW DELHI, July 28: The Supreme Court today banned all commercial vehicles older than 15 years from Delhi's roads from October 2 in an attempt to minimise vehicular pollution.

Hearing a batch of public interest petitions, a three-judge bench comprising Mr Justice A.S. Anand, Mr Justice B.N. Kirpal and Mr Justice V.N. Khare, also directed the government to strictly implement the ban on goods vehicle during the day time and fixed August 15 for compliance with the directive.

It also directed the petroleum ministry to take steps to ban the supply of loose 2-T oil by December 31, and ensure elimination of leaded-petrol supply by September 30. ``The time-frame fixed shall be adhered by all the authorities concerned and effective steps should be taken to bring the directons to the notice of the public through print and electronic media. Failure to abide by the directions would invite contempt proceeding,'' the court said. The petroleum ministry and the state transport authority would file affidvit withing 10 weeks disclosing the steps taken by them to supply lead-free petrol and catalytic converter so as to make the provisions effective. The transport commissioner of Delhi and DCP (traffic) shall be present in the court on every date of hearing, the court said. The court posted the matter for further hearing after three weeks.
