Two members of the Manchekar gang had demanded Rs 5 lakh from the businessman (name withheld by the police), threatening to kill him if he failed to cough up the money, the police said. After repeated threats, the trader agreed to pay up Rs 1 lakh and it was decided that Rs 50,000 would be paid to Manchekars mother at the gangsters residence in Parel.

Meanwhile, the victim filed a complaint with the Thane Police Commissioner Bhujangrao Mohite. A crime branch team led by ACP Lalit Godbole laid a trap at the gangsters residence in Parel late Sunday night and arrested Manchekars mother while accepting the money from the person who had gone to deliver the cash. An offence has been registered at the Vishnunagar police station in Dombivli, according to the police.
