Centre rushes more forces to HP

SHIMLA, Aug 5: The Centre today placed one additional battalion of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) at the disposal of Himachal Pradesh government for its deployment in Chamba area and an ``also released Rs. one crore as special assistance for mordernisation of state police and purchase of weapons.

The decision comes after a special high-level team submitting its report to Union Home Minister L K Advani and a detailed meeting Chief Minister, Prem Kumar Dhumal, with Union Home Minister in Delhi this afternoon.

According to a communication received here from special secretary of Union Home ministry, the ITBP company would reach Chamba by tomorrow, to take positions in the sensitive border areas. Former Chief Minister, Shanta Kumar, who earlier accompanied the Home Ministry team, also briefed Advani along with Dhumal. Two leaders had stressed for immediate deployment of para military forces in the area to flush out the terrorists.

The Union Home ministry has also directed the Indian Airforce toprovide one helicopter to the state authorities for using the same in combing operations and other aerial surveillance activities.

Chief Minister, when contacted, over phone, said a broad strategy to meet the challenge of militancy was being worked out at the highest level and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Farooq Abdullah, had also been summoned to Delhi for consultations. He said the state had requested Home Ministry to temporarily station ITBP battalion in the area for sometime and mount an equal pressure on the militants from other side simultaneously.
