Uma stuns Mayura

MUMBAI, August 5: Unseeded Uma Mahadevan upset top seed Mayura Wagle 13-10, 11-9 in the junior girls' semi-finals of the Thane District badminton championships at the Indoor Stadium today.

Uma will now play Rashmi Yeolekar, who defeated Deepali Upadhyay 11-0, 11-4 in the other semi-final.

Merric Gonsalves and Suraj Thakur played tough three-game matches before advancing in the junior boys' singles. Gonsalves beat Deepak Laad 10-15, 15-12, 15-12 while Thakur overcame Thakkar 15-3, 10-15, 15-10.

Another one to survive a close test was Ashish Bhide with a 15-8, 6-15, 15-10 win over Dinkar Bhatta.

Nine-year-old Kadambari Chedda proved that size doesn't matter when she fought hard against 12-year-old Manasi Agaokar before achieving a 10-13, 13-11, 11-2 win.
