The Lord's own munificence
The weekend I got in from London, Mumbai seemed to be in the throes of Drive-The-Monsoon-Blues-Away Dinners. The "mother" of all parties was hosted by Birthday girl Sheetal Bhagat at the Zodiac Grill.Doc Farhad had us all dancing and singing our way through all time favourites like Jiski Biwi and Summertime. His wife Anju into her fifth month yet svelte, made the rest of us look like Jiske Biwi Moti.

Govt patronage doesn't help: Historians
It's budget this year is a paltry Rs 2.24 crore, aptly described by Jawaharlal Nehru University historian Harbans Mukhia as "peanuts". It has Rs 30 lakh worth of bills pending. The Fifth Pay Commission award has yet to be implemented. Its building doesn't seem to have had a lick of paint since its inception in 1964 and has a pipal tree growing into its third floor.

Roving Eye
Gita Piramal's book, Business Maharaja's, was released in London this week by Lord Caines, the chairperson of BAT industries. To celebrate the event the CII held a lunch for Gita at the Bombay Brasserie. This book traces the rags to riches stories of many of India's top industrialists including Dhirubhai Ambani.
