Fudging FMCT
Now that a three-year deadlock has been broken, negotiations on a global treaty banning production of fissile material for nuclear weapons are due to commence at the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva. An optimistic view is that a non-discriminatory treaty could be wrapped up within three years.

Mother's on the line
I prefer Mother to God. Somehow she is more real, immediately accessible, whether alive, absent or dead. When alive my tears are wiped by a pallu that is stained with the milk of love. When I am away, I exclaim `Mother' in times of distress and feel a sense of comfort. My mother is still alive. Yet I have the sure knowledge within me that when she passes into dust, I will feel the same sense of comfort in taking her name.

The Sena-BJP smokescreen
Sulabhaah purushaa rajan satatam priya vaadinah, Apriyasya cha pathhyasya vakta shrota cha durlabah, translated -- Persons pleasing in speech are easy to find; it is difficult to find one who speaks or listens to the bitter but wholesome truth --, many centuries ago and, more lately, Justice Srikrishna in his one-page `Epilogue' to the voluminous report on the 1992-93 Mumbai riots. It is apparent that Justice Srikrishna had a fair inkling of how the Shiv Sena-led government would treat his findings.
