With paper lanterns and sticks of pungent incense, millions of Japanese gathered at family grave sites today for the eerie culmination of one of this country's oldest and most important holidays -- the festival of the dead. According to Japanese Buddhist belief, the spirits of the dead briefly return to the realm of the living each summer.
