CHENNAI, Aug 22: She waited with bated breath as Anjali Chopra lined up the all-important putt. And as the ball went tantalisingly close to the cup and stopped, a jubilant Parnita Garewal flung the golf ball into the air.
Waiting for a dejected Anjali to complete the formalities, a radiantly happy Parnita went across to shake her rival's hand and then rushed back to the pavilion, exclaiming, ``I have done it'' over and over again.
The country's top ranked woman golfer had kept her nerves under control and her emotions to herself even as she was pushed to the limit by the gutsy, skillful play of Anjali on the last day of the AVT-sponsored South India amateur ladies Open golf championship at the Cosmopolitan club course on Saturday. Now, in her triumphant moment, the Chandigarh lass could not hold herself any longer.
If there were any lingering doubts as to the ability of the 18-year-old Parnita, her display on Saturday settled them. It was indeed a noteworthy victory over a courageous opponent.
Again,conditions were far from ideal with the heavy rain forcing a delayed start. Ploughing through a sodden course might have been a major hurdle for others but not for Anjali. The diminutive Delhi girl made light of the adverse conditions. After dropping a stroke on the 1st, she birdied the 2nd only to bogey the 3rd. But finding her touch, she notched up birdies on the 6th and 7th to be one-under at the end of the front nine.
Parnita, playing percentage golf, parred every hole on the outward journey, save the 3rd which she bogeyed. On the return journey, Anjali dropped a stroke on the 10th but then, Parnita bogeyed the 11th. With a superb birdie on the 12th, Anjali narrowed the gap down to one stroke. And by the 14th, with Parnita dropping a stroke, the players approached the 15th absolutely level.
Now, it was going to be a case of both nerves and skill. On the 15th, Parnita notched up a birdie to regain the lead. This however was short lived for Anjali birdied the 16th.
