NEW DELHI, August 23: Formidable Hindustan Club edged past four-time league champions Shastri Club 2-1 in an exciting group B encounter of the Delhi Soccer Association-SAIL Senior Division Super League Football Championship at Ambedkar Stadim here today. All the goals came in the second half.
NEW DELHI, August 23: Formidable Hindustan Club edged past four-time league champions Shastri Club 2-1 in an exciting group B encounter of the Delhi Soccer Association-SAIL Senior Division Super League Football Championship at Ambedkar Stadim here today. All the goals came in the second half.
By virtue of this defeat, Shastri Club's hopes of making it to the semifinals were shattered. Indian Nationals who have already gathered 12 points from four matches will meet Hindustan Club in their last encounter on Tuesday. The race is between Hindustan (4 points) and Mughals Club who have seured eight points from five matches.
On changing ends, Hindustan mounted pressure against Shastri but their forwards fumbled. Shastri took the lead in the 50th minute when mid-fielder Gyano Ranjan's weak shot went inside the box after touching custodian Deepak Bisht's hands. Just one minute after, Hindustan's Amarjit Sahani restored parity off a powerful shot from a corner kick. The winning goal for Hindustan was scored by Hitender Rawat in 57th minute.Earlier, in another exciting encounter in group B, former league champions Mughals Club were held to a 1-1 draw by lowly-placed Shahdara Club.
