India moots global N-arms meet by 2000
India yesterday said the non-aligned summit should take the lead by proposing a global conference on a nuclear weapons convention before the end of this century and asked NAM countries to take a firm stand to combat international terrorism.

Sharif steamrolls Islam Bill through
A day after its decision to introduce Islamic laws, the Nawaz Sharif Government yesterday cracked its whip further. It first bulldozed the controversial Bill through a parliamentary standing committee despite walkouts by the Opposition and then reacted sharply to Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee's comments on the process of Islamisation saying it would most likely issue a formal protest tomorrow in this regard.

Foreign secretaries hold discussions in bid to thaw ice
Foreign secretaries of India and Pakistan held "lengthy discussions" on the sidelines of a preparatory session of the NAM summit in a bid to break the deadlock over the resumption of stalled dialogue process.
