Shivalik retain football title

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, Sep 1: Title holders Shivalik Public School, Sector 41 beat Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36, 2-1 to retain the title in the Chandigarh Sub-junior football championship for the Shivalik Trophy, which concluded at the Sector 17 Football Stadium here today.

SPS-41 dominated the proceedings, but were held back by GNP's strong wall like defence for the initial fifteen minutes of the play. However, an infringement by GNP's Amrit Pal Singh inside the penalty area forced the referee Bimal Sharma to point to the dreaded spot in the 17th minute. Joginder Singh made no mistake in converting the penalty kick and put his team up by a goal.

Buoyed by the lead, the SPS lads kept up the tempo of the game and made inroads into the rival territory. However, they failed to increase the margin.

Shivalik's Vinay Antil was the culprit on at least two occasions and just before the lemon break Sukhwinder's shot was easily saved by the GNP custodian Jasneet.

The second half of the encounter saw both the teams had at their best. Guru Nanak's forward line, comprising of Sandeep Singh, Mandeep Singh and Babocha, which failed to make an impact in the first session, was very organised in the second half. They were successful in their venture in the 40th minute when Mandeep Singh's direct shot from the top of `D' beat the advancing keeper Sanjay Uppal, dipping into the far right corner of the net (1-1).

The teams were under tremendous pressure for the remaining period of the contest. An indirect kick awarded to Shivalik in the 59th minute, which was converted by Vinay Antil (2-1), further escalated the tension between the teams. The Guru Nanak lads protested against the awarding of the kick and refused to continue.

However, the referee, after waiting for the remaining playing time (only 60 seconds) blew the whistle for Shivalik lads to emerge victorious.

The winners also qualified for the Subroto Mukerjee Cup football tournament to be held in Delhi in the second week of September.
