Bangladesh flood toll rises to 606

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA

DHAKA, Sept 5: Toll in the flood ravaged Bangladesh mounted to 606 with at least 31 more people killed since Friday, official sources said here today.

They said five persons including a minor girl were electrocuted yesterday in a city suburb under Lalbag thana when they were travelling in a boat in flood-affected Islambag area.

Officials at the Floods Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) said that overall situation deteriorated in the country today as the major rivers continued to rise.

``Due to rise of the rivers following heavy rains large parts of two districts -- Narail and Kushtia -- in the southwestern part got submerged,'' they said, and added the number of flood-hit districts rose to 47. The situation in the central part, including capital Dhaka, continued to worsen, according to the FFWC.

An official of FFWC said that 22 out of the 46 river monitoring stations showed the rivers including Padma, Jamuna and Meghna flowing above the red mark.

More than two crore people were either affected orrendered homeless due to the floods.

FFWC said a full moon on Saturday could worsen the already abnormal high tide in the Bay of Bengal.
