Paes-Bhupathi in quarter-finals

AGENCIES
WASHINGTON, Sept 7: Fourth seeds Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi stormed into the US Open doubles quarter-finals, beating unseeded Lan Bale (South Africa) and Danny Sapsford (Britain) in straight sets 6-0, 6-2 here on Sunday.

The Indian duo reeled off eight games in a row before conceding a game to their opponents. Paes and Bhupathi, ranked third in the world in team, had entered the semifinals last year.

In the junior tournament, Vijay Kannan defeated Alexander Bogomolov of the United States 6-3, 6-2 to enter the second round. Zaman Sanzaruz of India lost to Andy Ram of Israel in the first round of the boys singles at the USTA National Tennis Centre in Flushing Meadows.

Andy Ram scored by easy 6-2 6-1 win over Sanzaruz.

On Saturday, Bhupathi teamed with Mirjana Lucic of Croatia to upset Elena Likhovtseva (Russia) and Menno Oosting (Netherlands) 6-3 6-3 in the second round of the mixed doubles event and advanced to the quarters.

Martina Hingis and Monica Seles battled baffling winds and a pair ofstubborn opponents to set up a quarter-finals showdown, while French Open champion Carlos Moya survived another pressure-packed five-setter last evening at the US Open Tennis Championships.

In the biggest surprise on the women's side, upstart 11th-seeded Patty Schnyder sent five-time champion Steffi Graf the eighth seed, to her earliest exit at the Open since a first-round loss in her 1984 debut. Schnyder beat Graf, winner of 21 Grand Slam titles, 6-3, 6-4.

Schnyder will now play Wimbledon champion and third-seed Jana Novotna in the quarter-finals. Novotna beat ninth seed Irina Spirlea of Romania 6-3, 6-3.

Moya mounted yet another majestic effort as he fought off unseeded American Jan-Michael Gambill 6-2, 3-6, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) in his second successive marathon match.

Moya, who faced three match points in third set against Michael Chang in second round before prevailing in nearly four hours, clinched victory against the 21-year-old Gambill on his third match point of the three-hour match.

FormerWimbledon champion and fifth-seeded Richard Krajicek, was forced to retire in the second set of his match against Swede Thomas Johansson with a flare-up of a chronic tendinitis in the Dutchman's left knee.
