Clinton adrift in the sea of smut
US President Bill Clinton is hanging on grimly to his job amid signs that while the American public is shocked by the lurid accounts of his sex life detailed in the Starr report, his job approval rating is still high and they want him to remain in office. Although the President's fate rests with the US legislature, which can now proceed to impeach him, it is widely believed that he will stay in office or go depending on the public mood.

Advani brandishes Art 356
The government would use Article 356 when necessary ``as it is in some cases'', Home Minister L K Advani said yesterday. The statement is significant in the light of the persistent demand by the Samata Party and the BJP's Bihar unit for dismissal of the Bihar government.

FIPB clears Fiat, Honda projects
The Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) yesterday cleared foreign direct investments (FDI) worth Rs 760 crore, including that of American company, AES Transpower, Bharti Internet, Honda Siel and GE Lighting. The FIPB, however, deferred a proposal by Vijay Mallya's United Breweries (UB) to restructure its equity for four weeks following a request from the finance ministry.

Davenport cruises to maiden Slam
Lindsay Davenport today capped a wonderful year by becoming the first American-born woman to win the U S Open women's singles title since Chris Evert Lloyd in 1982. Her 6-3, 7-5 win over the top-seeded defending champion Martina Hingis also ensured that Davenport was first time lucky in her maiden Grand Slam final.
