Congress chalks out protests

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE

AHMEDABAD, Sept 14: Ahmedabad City-District Congress Committee has chalked out a week-long programme of public protest to build up tempo for the proposed Gujarat bandh of September 18.

Committee president Rajkumar Gupta told reporters here on Tuesday that huge rallies would be taken out throughout the city on Friday and Saturday in protest against the rising prices of essential commodities. On Saturday, an effigy of `demon of price rise' will be taken and burnt at Jashodanagar chokdi at 9.30 pm. This rally will start from Maninlal Mansion near Lal Darwaja at 4.30 pm.

The rallies, Gupta said, would be part of a public awareness campaign over the all-party Gujarat bandh. Besides, small rath yatras and women's rallies would be taken out in all the civic wards between September 13 and 17, in which the frontal organisations of the Congress would participate.

Shaherkotda MLA Manubhai Parmar said he had received requests from the people to steer protests against tariff hike imposed by Ahmedabad Electricity Compnay which ``we will take up after September 18 by organising rasta-roko and jail bharo programmes''.

On the groundnut oil situation, Gputa alleged that it had worsened because the government had, in lieu of election funds, allowed more oil slip outside the State instead of meeting the requirement and this happened despite excess production.
