Desperately Islamic
Pakistan's political leadership has done it again. Once more religion has been pressed into service to serve the political interests of the ruling establishment, legitimise a weak-kneed government that has failed to deliver, and heighten tensions in the region.

Turning trade-savvy
The BJP government is being true to its word of taking a more activist line on India's links to the World Trade Organisation (WTO). Increasingly it seems that it may also be a sensible line. The government's decision to comply with the WTO ruling against India on its patents law on a complaint filed by the European Union is no more than a formality.

Hyderabad portents
Thursday's celebration of the 50th anniversary of Hyderabad's liberation from the Nizam's rule showed how divisive such events can be. Far from seeing it as a unifying event, the three political parties which took the lead in commemorating it saw the event purely from their own limited perspectives.
