New light in starry lives

Sujata Assomull
MUMBAI, September 22: In just one week, actress Dimple Kapadia and daughters Twinkle and Rinke have made 3,000 candles for a three-day exhibition to be held at the lifestyle store, Allure, starting Friday. Twinkle and Rinke Khanna have been making candles under the brand name `Faraway Tree' for five months now. And when they are not shuttling between shoots or rehearsing, they have been busy making candles. Twinkle made her Bollywood debut about two years ago while Rinke only recently kicked off her acting career on stage.

``Candle-making is our passion. It is so satisfying... in just four hours you get to see your finished work,'' says Dimple, a keen artist herself. ``The girls have been able to find their own artistsic talents through candle-making. I love candles and when I am abroad always buy them, so I thought why not just make them myself,'' Dimple says.

The flicker of interest in candle-making first manifest itself about a year ago, when an unwell and off-work Twinkle tried her hand at it. Now, ithas become a family affair. Designer candles, some scented, some arometherapeutic, others have chunks of fruit in them and there is also a special, stained glass line. ``It is so addictive. Often Twinkle phones me on the way home from a shoot and asks me to start melting the wax,'' Dimple says.

Their products are available at several stores in the city including The Bombay Store, Good Earth and Allure. ``They have been selling very well. So we decieded to promote them,'' says Pawan Uttam, owner of Allure, located at Crawford Market. Dimple gives most of the credit to her daughters, ``who went around the stores themselves selling their products''. But they decided not to market their products under their names as they did not want people to buy them merely because they are made by a famous person. So Rinke came up with the name `Faraway Tree', the name of an adventure book she had enjoyed reading as a child. All the candles are homemade, and the Khanna girls do the wrapping themselves. And just because theyare made by famous hands these candles are still well-priced.

The smaller candles cost just Rs 150.
