Enchanting variety of films

This week we have French short films which demonstrate the art of bringing to life and putting across a storyline in a brief span. Aashay Film Club, in collaboration with Sakal Papers Trust and the Indian Federation on Ageing, has organised a show of films on old age.

In memory of Khansaheb Gulam Khwaja. Vaijayanti Gholap and Vijay Bakshi will present an interesting programme of vocal recital.

Alliance Francaise de Poona: La Rupture (1970, Colour, 124 min): Directed by Claude Chabrol, the cast includes Stephane Audran. Charles, a drug addict, wounds his son Michel in a fit of madness. His wife Helene leaves him and goes to stay in a lodge. Her father-in-law wants possession of his grand-son. Finally nothing happens according to his wishes and he ends up killing his son Charles. At 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Festival of French films: The Alliance Francaise de Poona in collaboration with the National Film Archive of India, will present a festival of short films with subtitles in English.

Films to be screened at National Film Archive of India, 6.30 p.m. on Wednesday are as below: l L'Histoire D'un Petit Homme Bizarre (1995, 12 min): Directed by Eric Le Roch.

Everybody is fond of Mister Michaux, a weird looking man, from his students to his neighbours. Yet everybody wonders why he stops on his way, several times in a day, to perform a little dance step, a different one every day. Is he really testing shoes for a secret trademark? Or is this his way to come to terms with the world?

Le Cri Du Morpion (1995, 11 min.): Directed by Mathieu Szprio.
Nono, ten, with his mother's help, records his own rap tune for his grandfather's 70th birthday. Proud of his gift, he goes to the family party...

Ayroton La Bete (1994, 13 min): Directed by Remy Burkel.
When he is accidentally removed from his natural environment, Aryton, a golden-green beetle, is taken in by Eliott, an eight-year-old city dweller...

Omnibus (1992, 10 min.): Directed by Sam Karmann.
Our man's main prop in life is his job with the national railroad service. When the railroad grants itself the privilege of changing the hourly rates, the life of our man is disturbed...

Dadou (1995, 22 min.): Directed by Roberto Garzelli.
It's hard for Lucie's father to understand why his little four-year-old daughter is so upset. Yet, at times, one look is all it takes...

The films to be screened at NFAI, 6.30 p.m. on Thursday are: l Lakme: Directed by Pascal Roulin (1993, 5 min).

A young British officer overhears the duets princess Lakme and Malika, her servant, which is symbolised by two hands miming the beauties and dangers to be found in the jungle.

La Saga Des Glaises: Directed by David Ferre (1990, 14 min).
A young girl, hounded by ferocious redeemers, seeks refuse in a swamp, where some peaceful clay creatures live.

John: Directed by Roberto Garzelli (1992, 20 min).
Many years ago, Jane Clayton persuaded her husband John, better known as Tarzan, to leave the jungle for good. Since then, they have been living somewhere in France...

Terra Incognita: Directed by David Ferre (1992, 12 min).
One evening, a shopkeeper has a visit from a strange traveller who sells him an extraordinary map, a universal map that is able to change with his travels. He then embarks upon a journey to the heart of the graphic world of ancient maps to find the land where the object was made.

La Vis: Directed by La Vis (1993, 18 min).
K is very good with his hands. He is kept busy building a UFO (in French: Voluntarily Unidentified Object). He is about to stick the sharpened strip of his screwdriver into a screw, when he realises that there is no slot in it. How horrible and disappointing.

Deus Ex Machina: Directed by Vincent Mayrand (1993, 19 min).
The unusual and comical events of a day in the life of a strange resort photographer, forced by love or by fear to influence the lives of his models.

Gisele Kerozene: Directed by Jan Kounen (1988, 4 min).
A group of `proto punk' witches mount ther brooms and indulge in a wild track race to try to get back a magic skull cowardly stolen by Gisele Kerozene.

Max Mueller Bhavan: Der Bruch (The Break) 1988, Colour, 119 min. Directed by Frank Beyer, camera is handled by Peter Ziesche, the cast includes Gotz George and Rolf Hoppe.

Berlin, 1946, Lubowitz and his friend are planning a coup - they plan to break into the Reichsbahn treasury. At 7 p.m. on Friday.

Engravings: The French Foreign Office, The French Embassy and The Alliance Francaise de Poona present an exhibition of engravings - Lino engraving, Linotype, Mezzotint, Etching. The aim is to present a range of techniques and practices through the works of young artistes who have each a singular manner to deal with engraving and to integrate into their own art. At Yogi's Gallery, Kanhaiya Classics, Boat Club Road, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., Monday to Saturday.

Tribal art exhibition: Traditional Warli paintings, wood carvings, 300 paintings and artifacts on display. At Pune Cantonment Board's art gallery, on till October 9.

Sand paintings: Nanubhai Mansuria, Sanjay Vachhani and Ankit Mansuria will exhibit their sand paintings of Christ, Mahatama Gandhi, Lord Ganesh and other topics. A live demonstration by Manubhai Mansuria will be held. Organised by the Society Collection at Residency Club at stall No. 11, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. upto Sunday. Other items like designwear are on display at the venue.

Exhibition: Fabric, batik and oil paintings by Shanta Deshpande. At Ravindra Kala Kunj, Nehru Memorial Hall, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Batik: Hand-painted batik and embroidered salwar kameez, sarees and crepes . At Fortune Art Gallery, Bhandarkar Road, on till Sunday.

Small is beautiful: Subhash Kulkarni of Kalpataru Bonsai Study Group, along with Concern India Foundation and Pride Hotel will hold a bonsai exhibition. At the terrace of Pride Hotel, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Classical music: A programme in memory of Khansaheb Gulam Khwaja. Vaijayanti Gholap and Vijay Bakshi will present vocal recital. At Bhave Primary School Hall, near Peru Gate, Sadashiv Peth, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday.
