Dinesh Beedi sales slump 30%

ENS ECONOMIC BUREAU

KOZHIKODE, Oct 3: The Dinesh Beedi Central Co-operative Society has registered a 30.26 per cent drop in sales over the last eight years. Beedi sales which were rather slow in the initial years, have reported an alarmingly negative growth especially during the past four years.

While the fall in beedis amounted to 220 crore during 1990-91 to 1997-98, the average annual fall in beedis from 1994-95 works out to 47 crore. Although it was GS Panicker who first evolved alternative strategies to find out employment avenues to the workers in the event of mass unemployment due to a complete breakdown in the market, the diversification strategy could be implemented only last year. The new products, pickles, curry powder and coconut cream were formally launched in Kannur.
