CLEVELAND, Oct 3: German Chancellor-elect Gerhard Schroeder will visit President Bill Clinton in Washington on Friday next (October 9), the White House said yesterday.
Schroeder, who will replace Helmut Kohl following his Social Democrat (SPD) party's victory in Sunday's elections, will discuss US-German ties and the ``broad common agenda'' the two countries share, said the statement issued in Ohio where Clinton is traveling.
Though Schroeder will not be formally confirmed in his post by Parliament until October 27, White House aides said he was eager to meet again with Clinton. The two met previously on May 13 in Berlin and on August 5 in Washington. Clinton had good relations with the outgoing Chancellor Helmut Kohl, whose government lost heavily in elections on Sunday after 16 years in power. But Schroeder shares similar views on social and economic policy with the US president and is expected to develop a close working relationship with him as well.
