Maharashtra revises pay of 20 lakh employees
The Maharashtra government has finally decided to implement the recommendations of the Fifth Pay Commission for an estimated 20 lakh employees with retrospective effect from January 1, 1996. The alliance government will have to bear an additional burden of Rs 3,000 crore annually owing to the hike in the wages.

UTI sends Sensex crashing by 224 points
It was "black Monday" again as Indian stock markets plunged under sustained unloading amidst fears that Unit Trust of India (UTI) would downsize its equity holdings. The Bombay Stock Exchange's Sensex crashed by a whopping 224 points, or 7.23%, as panic-driven market operators sent share prices and indices to new lows of the year.
