Phoolan Devi withdraws plea from SC
Bandit turned politician Phoolan Devi has withdrawn from the Supreme Court an appeal against Kanpur court's decision rejecting Uttar Pradesh government's application to withdraw all dacoity cases against her. A division bench comprising Justice K T Thomas and Justice M Srinivasan, which had stayed execution of the arrest warrant issued against Phoolan Devi by Kanpur (dehat) special court on August 4, dismissed the petition as withdrawn after her counsel pleaded for withdrawal of the petition.

Now, Shankaracharyas will have to measure up to VHP yardstick
In a bid to achieve its wider goal of unifying the Hindu society, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has embarked on its most arduous task yet -- that of bringing some semblance of order to the institution of Shankaracharyas. For the first time, the VHP has convened a meeting of the Kendriya Margdarshak Mandal to frame yardsticks for distinguishing "real'' Shankaracharyas from their pretenders and challengers.

US at it again; Envoy refuses to accept Indian stand on Kashmir
US Ambassador Richard F Celeste has brushed aside the Indian stand on Kashmir, refusing to accept that the Kashmir issue was "internal' to India. He said tensions across the line of control had become an issue of major concern, especially because India and Pakistan had now acquired nuclear capability.
