Vajpayee buys Akalis peace with package and panel
The BJP yesterday bought its way out of its current troubles with the Akali Dal by offering a package for Punjab consisting of a loan waiver to farmers, compensation to the victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and a fertiliser plant in Bhatinda.

New states' bills for winter session
The BJP-led Government plans to introduce bills for the creation of four new states in the winter session of Parliament, which will commence in New Delhi on November 30.

Athavale snubs Ambedkar, declares separate schedule for party polls
The crisis in the faction-ridden Republican Party of India (RPI) worsened yesterday with a section dubbing as ``unconstitutional'' the organisational polls announced by Prakash Ambedkar later this month and instead coming out with a fresh schedule.
