Portuguese writer wins Nobel prize
Portuguese novelist Jose Saramago has been named the winner of the 1998 Nobel Literature Prize. Saramago, 75, wrote his breakthrough novel in 1982, Baltasar And Blimunda. Saramago is the fourth consecutive European to win the prestigious prize.

The fabric of life
Fashion for Arjun Khanna has always been a way of life. From an early age, he fell in love with clothes. He'd doodle all sorts of collars, cuffs, women's faces and so on, in a class room filled with children who could never imagine that an Indian fashion designer could ever exist in the future. Names like YSL, Armani and Versace were something they could only relate to on a bottle, on their mother's dressing table -- if at all!

My first break
Fashion designer Manish Malhotra unveils his new collection for the festive season, at Reverie, today. Run in partnership with Avanti Birla and Kajal Anand, the Napean Sea Road store opened to rave reviews and if you see empty racks it is just that people are buying his stuff as soon as it is put on hangers. But being a couturier was not easy for this self-trained designer.
