SURAT, Oct 12: A police sub-inspector's motorcycle was torched by a mob on Monday morning, after the deputy sarpanch of Sachin village, on the outskirts of the city, was named an accused in a case of chemical theft registered in the police station late on Sunday night.According to information, an Enfield motorcycle of Sachin PSI A R Singh was torched by an unruly mob as the PSI threatened to take the sarpanch into custody. As per details, one Vipul Ramnik Shah, in a complaint lodged with the station, had named Raju alias Rajendra Patel, deputy sarpanch of the village as one of the accused in a case of chemical theft from a unit in Sachin GIDC.
On Monday morning, when the PSI took a few persons into custody for interrogations, Raju reached the police station with a mob and demanded that they be released. The PSI in turn attempted to arrest him for his involvement. In the scuffle that followed, the violent mob torched his vehicle parked outside the station.
Residents of Sachin have threatened agitational measures from Tuesday, including a rasta roko against the PSI's action and have demanded his immediate transfer.
