AHMEDABAD, OCT 14: Aspirants for places in the national squad, including discards, get a golden opportunity to push forward their claims for recognition when the NKP Salve (Challenger) Trophy day-night cricket tournament commences at the Sardar Patel Gujarat Stadium here tomorrow.Tomorrow's match -- scheduled to start at 1530 hours -- features India, to be led by Nayan Mongia in the absence of Mohammed Azharuddin who has opted out of the tournament for personal reasons, and the Ajay Jadeja-led India A team.
India and India B, with Saurav Ganguly at its helm and Sachin Tendulkar in its ranks, cross swords on October 16 before the round-robin stage ends with the match between India A and India B on October 17.
The top two teams in the round-robin stage would meet in the final, scheduled for October 18. The tourament has assumed added importance as the squad for the Dhaka nine-nation Wills Trophy Tournament beginning on October 24 and the tri-nation Coca Cola Cup Tournament at Sharjah, commencing onNovember 6, is to be named on the last day.
The national skipper for the tournaments at Dhaka and Sharjah is to be chosen here tomorrow.
