Nandita upsets top seed Megha

NEW DELHI, Oct 14: Nandita Chandrashekhar, till now hovering in the lower reaches of the domestic circuit, sprang a big surprise bouncing top seed Megha Vakharia in the girls under-14 second round in the DSCL National tennis championships at the Delhi Tennis Association courts here today.

Nandita, a trainee at the CAT Academy, Chennai took out the top-seeded Mumbai girl 7-5, 6-7(3), 6-4. In yet another surprise, the talented Ashutosh Singh took out father Balram Singh's trainee and under-16 top seed Parantap Chaturvedi in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, in the second round.

Meanwhile, the girls-16 and boys-14 events were not as turbulent despite the usual sprinkling of well contested three setters. Though he lost out to P Ravikrishnan in the under-16, Chennai's Avinash Reddy had reason to smile at the end of a long day, beating Chandigarh's Chatvinder Singh 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 in the under-14. In the girls -16 event too, Nandita had a good win against Rani Smita Jain, again in three sets.

Mumbai's Isha Lakhaniadavnced into the girls u-14 third round. In a second round match today, Isha squashed Priyanka Parekh 6-2, 6-4.
