MUMBAI, Oct 14: Blind chess player Charudatta Jadhav did India proud by finishing joint second position in the Irish Open Chess Tournament for the Blind held in Cork (Ireland) from October 9 to 12.
Charudatta Jadhav finished with 4.5 points out of a possible 6. Shirish Patil, who was runner-up in the nationals for the blind, kept the Indian flag flying by finishing in joint third position with 4 points.
The Irish Open had attracted 34 bilind players from five countries. The tournament was conducted on a Swiss League basis and was played over six rounds. J Magnussun of Sweden with an ELO rating of 2315, was the top seed and went on to win the tournament. There were three other rated players, two from England and one from Germany, a release said here today.
Charudatta Jadhav, who had performed creditably in the world championships for the blind in the Czech Republic, was very confident of doing well in the tournament and finished ahead of three rated players.
For Shirish Patil who was participating forthe first time in an international tournament, it was a superlative debut. He finished in joint third with J Pohlers (Elo 2130) after beating S Willamson (Elo 1944) of England in the final round. Madan Bagayatkar of Canara Bank also finished among the top eight with 3.5 points. The release added.
