Prisoner escapes from Baroda Jail
One Raju Bharwad, a murder convict serving life sentence in the Baroda Central Jail since April 22, 1993, fled from the jail on Wednesday evening. Jail superintendent Ramnivas Meena told `Express Newsline' that Bharwad had of late been promoted to be senior prisoner and made watchman for the 50 cows and bulls of the jail. He fled when he was out in the 26-acre open area around the jail with another warder Gopalbhai for cattle-grazing. Bharwad, hailed from Dhandhuka while his family members currently live in Surat. Meena said police of both the cities had been alerted. Meanwhile, according to official sources, Bharwad is the fourth convict to escape from the jail even as one of the three others had been nabbed in recent past.

GR flayed
Gujarat People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) acting president Tulsi Boda and vice-president J S Bandukwala have condemned the government decision to permit private schools to ignore the provision for granting admission to backward students. They say the government has shirked its responsibilities from reimbursing expenses on providing free education to girls, and also given a free hand to private schools on recruitment of teachers.

Autonomy
The Bank of Maharashtra has been granted autonomy by the Union Ministry of Finance based on the bank's performance for the past three years, an official release said here on Wednesday. The autonomy to this public sector bank symbolised the financial strength, net worth of over Rs 100 crore.

Swamiji's visit
Shrimad Sadyajyot Shankarashram Swamiji of Shri Chitrapur Samasthan, Chitrapur Mutt will visit the city on October 17. A programme has been organised by the G S B Sabha on the occasion at the Akota Atithigruh, opposite Akota Stadium from 9 am to 2 pm.

Exhibition
A Rangoli Exhibition has been organised by city-based Swastik Rangoli Kalakar Group from October 17 to 27 at the `Kirti Mandir', near Aradhana Cinema. The exhibition will remain open daily from 5.30 pm to 9.30 pm.
