SURAT, Oct 14: Keshav M Desai, a police sub-inspector (PSI) stationed at the Umra police station, died under mysterious circumstances on Wednesday afternoon after a bullet from his service revolver ripped through his chest. Desai's wife told the police in her statement that the bullet accidentally went off while he was cleaning his weapon.According to information, Desai was cleaning his service revolver, in his house located at 403 Shivkrupa Apartments, near the Old Umra Octroi Post, when his service revolver went off at around 1.30 am. He was then rushed to the Mission Hospital at Athwa Lines where he was declared dead.
The deceased was reportedly mentally unstable after receiving head injuries in an incident a few years ago, which was confirmed by top police officials.
Police Commissioner Maniram, who has asked DCP (South) D M Nayak to conduct an inquiry into the case, said, ``He was an excellent police officer and the inquiry will determine the exact reason behind his death.'' The police are yet to conduct a post mortem of the body, Maniram added.
A case under section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure has been registered at the Umra police station.
Top police officials, expressing regret over the incident, said that Desai was an efficient PSI and was in the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) before being posted to Umra.
