Mob ransacks civic zonal office; manhandles engineer in city

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SURAT, Oct 14: Residents of Tadwadi in Rander, aided by Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad activists, ransacked the west zone office of Surat Municipal Corporation and manhandled engineer K K Shah on Thursday over a row concerning a temple that has been blocking a road-widening project.

The corporation did not file any complaint with police.

Zonal commissioner K C Mehta told Express Newsline that no police complaint was lodged as the damage was ``not substantial.'' He said there was a scuffle at the zone office but no official was seriously injured.

Officials denied that Shah was beaten up by activists, though eyewitnesses confirmed that he was bashed up.

According to information, SMC engineers and officials had gone to Saya Ashish Society in Tadwadi to clear encroachments and widen a road around 9.30 am. As the demolition squad started pulling down the temple under construction, BJP activist Deepak Africawala led a group of VHP and Dal workers and squatted there, preventing the squad from demolishing the temple. Later, they were joined by residents of the area. In the ensuing scuffle, Shah was beaten up by the mob.

Soon, K C Mehta and zonal officer Ashok Mehta rushed to the spot and pacified the mob, requesting to sort out the issue at the zonal office. But, as the group reached the office, it turned violent, and began breaking the table glass and throwing chairs and table around. Telephone wires were also pulled out before police arrived and dispersed the mob.
