Malaysia's former number two leader, Anwar Ibrahim, said his release from detention under a harsh security law was prompted by Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad's fear of his countrymen's wrath and pressure from the international community.

The Mideast summit goes into its fourth and final scheduled day, with US President Bill Clinton pulling out all the stops in a high-stakes bid to force the reluctant Israeli and Palestinian leaders to sign a new peace accord.

India, Pak to minimise N-risk
India and Pakistan ended their first peace talks in a year yesterday on an optimistic note, agreeing to meet again in February 1999 in New Delhi. At the end of the foreign secretary-level dialogue, both countries underscored their commitment to reduce the risk of a nuclear conflict.
