Bhujbal sends CM onions for Diwali

MUMBAI, Oct 20: Diwali gifts can be crafted with ingenuity though they are usually accompanied by a colourful box of assorted mithai. But along with the customary pedas

, Maharashtra Chief Minister Manohar Joshi, his Cabinet colleagues and some newspaper editors today received a box containing a kilo of one of the costliest ingredients of the Mumbaikar's daily diet - onions - which was Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, Chhagan Bhujbal's unique way of conveying his spicy season's greetings.

The gesture was meant to encourage the recipients to shed a few tears at the current Rs 40 per kg, the highest ever the root has ever cost in the metropolis.

Last week, Opposition members in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had presented a Diwali gift of onions to Mayor Nandu Satam to draw his attention to the runaway price of this essential ingredient.
