Sharma's designer friend keeps deals under wraps

Smeeta Mishra Pandey
NEW DELHI, OCT 27: Kunjum Buddhiraj, a fashion designer, may provide leads to alleged Dawood frontman Romesh Sharma's extortion deals with businessmen and even his Dubai connections, say the police. But the hitch is that she refuses to talk.

When the Indian Express team visited Buddhiraj's house today, a woman claiming to be her mother said she had been, ``victimised by Romesh Sharma.''

The senior Buddhiraj said, ``Kunjum, 28, is a small-time fashion designer who was out looking for work a few years ago. She went to Sharma assuming that he would provide her with the all-important connections that a designer needs. But she was caught in a trap and was never able to get out of it.''Buddhiraj is currently on bail; she was arrested and charged with possessing two passports. The investigating team question her everyday but have not succeeded in getting her to open up.

A team raided Buddhiraj's B-121, Sarvodaya Enclave house on the night of October 20, when Sharma's Mayfair residence was alsoraided.

Says Buddhiraj's mother, ``Kunjum had gone to Sharma's house on the day after Diwali to get back her car. ``She had gone to Sharma's Mayfair house on Diwali and she left without taking her car. She was there when the police raided the house. Our house was also raided simultaneously.''

Income-Tax officials have seized Rs 4 lakh, fixed deposit receipts worth Rs 16.5 lakh and an unspecified amount of jewellery during the raid. Sharma had apparently bought the Sarvodaya Enclave house for Buddhiraja. The first floor of the house is registered in her name, while the ground floor belongs to Sharma.

Buddhiraja's family are now trying to ensure they are not in any way associated with Sharma. Buddhiraja's mother said, ``I never approved of my daughter's friendship with Sharma. I am happy he is in police custody and hope he is never released. ``My lawyers say that Kunjum will be free from these hassles within three months and the police will also return the passports. I'll take her to London then and we'llnever come back.''

A senior South district police officer said, ``We have spent hours interrogating Kunjum. But she has remained tight-lipped about Sharma's connections. From what she has told us, it seems she is one of Sharma's victims who later connived with him when she found no way out.''

Meanwhile, Romesh Sharma was brought back to the Capital today after an ``unsuccessful'' one-day trip to Allahabad. A team of the Hauz Khas police had taken him there to recover the original contract of the helicopter deal and his revolver. Sources disclosed that the police team made little breakthrough.

A South district police officer said: ``We have seized certain documents from his Allahabad house. We have also seized the revolver and have obtained some documents related to the helicopter deal. Sharma now claims that the remaining documents are with a director of Reliance Industries. The case is getting more and more complicated.''

Later in the day, Sharma was taken to the All India Institute of MedicalSciences twice for ``routine'' checkup. Additional SHO (Hauz Khas) Anand Shukla said: ``All I can say is that we are doing everything according to the Supreme Court directive that any person in police custody has to undergo medical checkup from time to time.''

In a related development, the police today interrogated a number of people from Sharma's newly formed All-India Bharatiya Congress Party. Sharma, who is currently on police remand under the Arms Act, will be produced in court tomorrow. DCP (Crime Branch) Karnail Singh was preparing the papers of the Laxman Jivnani case at the district Crime Cell in Amar Colony today.

Jivnani had registered a case against Sharma alleging that the latter had taken the Mayfair house from him by force. A police officer said: ``We had obtained police remand for Sharma with a lot of difficulty. But Sharma's interrogation has not provided any definitive breakthrough.''
