CALCUTTA, OCT 30: Political parties in West Bengal are engaged in a game of one-upmanship on the issue of spiralling prices with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today taking up a novel method to sell onions and potatoes at cheaper rates.State BJP president Tapan Sikdar today sold onions at Rs 20 a kg and potatoes for Rs 5 along with some party functionaries, while ruling Left Front held Vajpayee government responsible for the skyrocketing prices.
Sikdar charged the West Bengal government with failing to control prices of vegetables produced in the State and demanded that it should also provide subsidy as was being done by some of the State governments who were selling onions from their outlets. The Centre, he said, had already imposed a ban on export of onions and potatoes.
The West Bengal government has convened a meeting on Sunday to chalk out programmes against price rise, official sources said. State Home (Police) Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharya said yesterday that the government is trying totackle the issue both administratively and politically.
Sikdar said while the Centre has responsibility in controlling prices of essential commodities like edible oil and onion, the State government had also its responsibilities which it failed to discharge. Instead, the Front government blamed only the Centre which was ``politically motivated'', he charged.
Trinamool Congress, a BJP ally, has already announced its agitation programme against both Centre and State government on the price rise issue, party spokesman Sudip Bandopadhyay said.
It will take to the street on the issue from November 2 and would launch dharnas, hold meetings and organise law violation programmes in the State. The Congress in a bid to take the wind out of Trinamool Congress' sails has decided to launch agitation from November 1.
WBPCC working president Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi held both BJP-led coalition and Left Front government in the State responsible for the ``unprecedented price hike'' and said ``consumers black day'' wouldbe organised by Congress on Sunday.
