DHAKA, OCT 30: Jacques Kallis and Steve Elworthy are two South African youngsters with immense talent. Kallis is now comfortably settled in the team as a solid batsman while speedster Elworthy got a ticket into the playing XI here after the pull-out of injured trio Allan Donald, Shaun Pollock and Lance Klusener.Today, Kallis showed his talent with a breathtaking, unbeaten 100-ball 113 and Elworthy -- in a hostile spell -- dismissed Romesh Kaluwitharana, Sanath Jayasuriya and Aravinda de Silva as the Sri Lankans went down by 92 runs in a rain-curtailed semi-final of the Wills Mini-World Cup tournament.
Kallis was in a murderous mood after overnight and early morning rain delayed the start of the day-night match by over three hours. He sent the Lankan bowlers on a leather-hunt, blasting five sixes and an equal number of fours as the South Africans overcame a slow start to finish with a healthy 240 for seven in 39 overs.
The Lankan reply was hampered by persistent drizzle after their target was reduced to224 in 34 overs as more rain in the interval delayed their start. But, as in their opening encounter with New Zealand, the Lankans could not get going.
Elworthy bowled quick and with the rain-threat more pronounced, the Lankans did not wish to waste any time. Openers Jayasuriya and Kaluwitharana lived dangerously, even managing some boundaries, but a wicket was always coming. Kaluwitharana tried to hit Elworthy `on the up' but, with the ball skidding on, miscued it to South African skipper Hansie Cronje.
The Lankan situation then was such that it sought a Herculean task from their last match hero and skipper Arjuna Ranatunga. But the South Africans were unrelenting. If Elworthy had executed his role to perfection, Cronje bowled a gem to get Ranatunga after Jonty Rhodes took an unbelievable catch to send back pinch-hitter Chaminda Vaas. The Lankan continued with their harakiri and the end was a tame surrender.
Earlier, Kallis decided to take the aerial route. As sixes started pouring, Lankans lost theinitiative after their seamers had given them a good start with three wickets.
Muthiah Muralitharan was expected to be the key bowler in Lanka's weak attack, but Kallis took a special liking to the off-spinner. He swatted him thrice over the mid-wicket boundary while a six each came off leg-spinner Upul Chandana and the other off-spinner Kumara Dharmasena. Darryl Cullinan also played an entertaining knock of 30 before Dharmasena trapped him in front.
