NEW DELHI, November 2: Army Boys Sports Company, BRC Danapur won the 27th edition of the Nehru Junior hockey tournament when they outplayed Chotu Ram Zamindar School from Sonepat 4-0 in a one-sided final played at the National Stadium here today. The winners led 1-0 at the breather. Earlier, in a fight-to-finish encounter to decide the third position, Lyallpur Khalsa Senior Secondary School (Jalandhar) edged out Birsamunda Vidyapitha (Rourkela) 11-10 in sudden death.The Danapur dominated the first-session proceedings although the Sonepat defence withstood the frequent attacks for almost the entire half. With their supporters cheering them hoarse, Sonepat team also made several inroads into the Danapur goal-area but their forwards could not convert their superiority into goals. They earned three penalty corners but all proved futile.
With hardly a few seconds remaining for the conclusion of the first half, Danapur struck, in the form of a goal from Mancid Bhengra.
After change of ends, the Danapur boys entered the field with renewed vigour and struck a second goal within seconds. Arvind Kumar doing the trick this time. Even as the Sonepat boys tried to get back into the game with a few forays into the Danapur area, the latter struck two goals in quick succession to finish off with a comfortable win. Biraj tete and skipper Vijay Topno scored a goal each in the 61st and 67th minute, respectively.
Sonepat team earned three penalty corners in the second half as well. But they could not convert any one of them and faded away.
In the match to decide third place, Lyallpur Khalsa and Birsamunda were level 2-2 at the end of regulation period and 6-6 at the end of tie-breaker. In sudden-death, Jalandhar converted all five strokes while Rourkela failed with the last. Satnam Singh and Pavitarjit Singh scored for Jalandhar team in regulation time while Junal Bara and mangra Minz were the scorers for Rourkela.
Six best players of the tournament received a sum of Rs 2,000 each. They are: Satish Kumar (CRZ), Arvind Kumar (Army Boys), Sanjib Beck (Birsamunda), Bharat Kumar (Army Boys), Satinder Pal Singh (Lyallpur Khalsa) and Yudvinder Singh (Shivalik Public School).
The Pepsi penalty corner award went to satinder pal Singh (Rs 2,000) while his team Lyallpur got Rs 8,000.
The Danapur school landed a whopping prizemoney of Rs one lakh while CRZ School collected Rs 60,000. Lyallpur Khalsa won Rs 40,000 for their effort.
B Mohapatra, coach of the Army Boys team was awarded Rs 5,000 and Phool Kumar, who trained the Sonepat side won Rs 3,000.
Meanwhile, 14 teams have entered for the 16th Nehru-ONGC sub-junior hockey tournament (under-15) which began here yesterday.
The groupings are:
Group 1: Khalsa Academy (Amritsar), Govt High School (Gurgaon), G S Kumar Vidyalaya (Gujarat), Boys High School (Poonch).
Group 2: BAV Inter College (Meerut), Shivaji Vidyaniketan (Maharashtra), St Anthony High School (Goa).
Group 3: Children's Academy (Bhopal), Govt High School (Mizoram), Sadul Sports School (Bikaner).
Group 4: Torban Kshetri Leikai Jr School (Imphal), Sat Guru Partap Academy (Ludhiana), B S Agricultural School (Khera Garhi, Delhi) and G G S Khalsa School (Chandigarh).
